Sublimation printing is a unique method to transfer an image utilizing heat to transfer dye onto materials. The designs are long lasting and they maintain vibrance.
1. The History
A French researcher Noel de Plasse invented it in 1957 when he observed that dyes sublimate, and he could manipulate it for printing while working for a textile company in France. He continued to develop the process and eventually founded a new company titled Sublistatis SA to commercialize this technique.
2. Sublimation Process
The process uses images printed with dye onto special paper. The dyes used turn into gas when brought under heat and pressure and then permanently transfers onto a poly coated substrate like metal, glass, ceramic, fabric, to name a few. The effects are permanent and less prone to fading, as the dye is embedded in the substrate rather than simply laying on top like a normal print.
